Double-blind

video installation, video 6 min, strobe, low ceiling

2019

Video is like the excerpt from a movie, where the same moment of drama is re-lived and repeated. It is a drama between father, daughter, the city, the past, and the future. The plot hangs on the state of the characters as they walk through timeless Moscow. The father tells his daughter about what was here before, and the daughter is continually crying whilst being located at a different time.

When you get to the place where you grew up, you memorize everything that is linked to this place, house, backyard, or shops… This feeling is especially inherent in people born and raised in small towns. The images, random clips of the past, hypersensitivity to a space, and the perception of a space that had been changed forever revive in the mind. These places often mean a lot. For instance, that particular bakery might mean nothing to a random person who passes by, but for you, it carries the memory of the times when you were a child when many of your beloved ones were still alive, and times when you had nothing but to live.

The work is about the inconsistency and mismatch of the real and imagined past, about the painful memories that break out over the years, about a city that is home, but perhaps only exists in your memories.
